Children nag and drive you crazy. “Mommmmm, can we get a Pleeeeeze dog? Pleeeeeze?” As every parent knows, nagging works, so you’re exploring different options and breeds and you’ve decided on a Mini Australian Shepherd. But you only have a small garden. How big do Mini Australian Shepherds grow? They are smaller than their ancestral Australian Shepherd, but larger than any of their toy breeds.
Where do Mini Australian Shepherds come from?
The Mini Australian Shepherd has an interesting history. They are the descendants of the Australian Shepherd and – you guessed it – they originated in Australia. However, you might be surprised to learn that they are no longer considered only Australian dogs and were actually bred in the USA, California.
Are Mini Australian Shepherds as good as family pets?
These dogs were originally bred as farm dogs and were used to herd cattle. They were highly intelligent and well-functioning dogs. However, the breed has evolved over time.
Mini Australian Shepherds are very playful dogs and they absolutely love getting around and running around. They have a great temperament, are cute and loyal. As such, they are great for children and are one of the most perfect dog breeds to keep as a family pet.
Are Mini Australian Shepherds very active dogs?
These dogs are very energetic. They need a lot of attention and plenty of exercise. For long walks – at least half an hour – it should be done at least two or three times a day. They also enjoy playing games like chasing a ball and jumping to catch something.
Mini Australian Shepherds loves the company. If they are alone all day, they may bark endlessly because they are alone. They are highly destructive and can do a lot of damage if left to their own devices for most of the day.
As such, they are not the most ideal dogs for people who work all day and are away from home. No one wants to return home after a long and difficult day to find that Charlie was bored and completely destroyed the new sofa! Despite its small size, Charlie can wreck your entire apartment.
How big do they grow?
As with almost all dog breeds, the Mini Australian Shepherd female is smaller than its male counterpart. While females usually grow to a size between 13-17 inches, a fully adult male will likely be 15-20 inches tall. They can weigh anywhere from 25 to 40 pounds.
Do Mini Australian Shepherds have health problems?
A Mini Australian Shepherd can be expected to live 12 to 15 years. They are prone to some health problems. A common challenge for this breed is hip concern. They often suffer from hip dysplasia. This is a situation where the ball and socket of the hip joint do not fit together properly and cause them to be grinded hard rather than easily sliding against each other. This movement causes severe pain.
Cataracts of the eyes are a common problem for Mini Australian Shepherds as they get older. As in humans, a cataract is a cloudy film that forms over the lens of the eye and causes vision loss after a while.
Do they need a lot of grooming?
These dogs have long hair and usually have double layers of hair. As a result, they poured a lot. Charlie will need frequent brushing with a good quality brush to keep his hair in top condition and not matted.
These playful puppies like to roll on the ground, so their hair tends to get knotted easily. You’ll want to brush the knots right away because if left for too long it can be very difficult to remove and sometimes needs to be carefully cut with sharp scissors.
Mini Australian Shepherds generally love water, so it’s pretty easy to wash them. This is equally good because they can get pretty dirty with anything running outside. Washing Charlie once a month is a good guide if he’s playing and running outside every day. If your Charlie is mostly a house dog, every two months will probably be enough to keep him clean and healthy.
Although Mini Australian Shepherds don’t usually grow very large, they can be quite a lot of work. However, they make great pets.
